Open Source Hub Vienna – Ein neuer Treffpunkt für Innovation
Mit dem von der Wirtschaftsagentur initiierten Open Source Hub Vienna entsteht ein zentraler Anlaufpunkt für Wissen, Best Practices und Vernetzung. Ziel ist es, den offenen Austausch zu fördern, Projekte sichtbar zu machen und den Einsatz zukunftsweisender Open-Source-Technologien wie FIWARE voranzutreiben.

Eröffnung des FIWARE iHub
Bei der feierlichen Eröffnung am 15. September 2025 bot ein vielfältiges Programm spannende Einblicke in die Welt von Open Source und FIWARE.

  • Keynote & Impulse: Expert*innen aus Forschung, Verwaltung und Wirtschaft sprachen über die Bedeutung von Open Source für digitale Souveränität, Sicherheit und Innovationskraft.

  • Praxisbeispiele: NEC Labs präsentierte ein KI-Modell, das das Risiko für Landminen-Verseuchung in Kambodscha vorhersagt. Weitere Vorträge zeigten, wie Digital Twins und die Visualisierung von Echtzeitdaten smarte Städte, Energieprojekte und Mobilitätslösungen unterstützen können.

  • Workshop „Smart City-Plattformen verstehen und anwenden“: Prof. Dr. Haydar Mecit (Hochschule Bochum) gab eine praxisnahe Einführung in FIWARE-basierte Smart-City-Plattformen und demonstrierte, wie IoT-Technologien urbane Mobilitäts- und Energiewenden beschleunigen können.

Die Eröffnung bot nicht nur fachlichen Input, sondern auch Raum für Networking, Austausch und den Start einer lebendigen Open-Source-Community in Wien.

FIWARE im Fokus
Als offizieller FIWARE iHub organisiert Wien künftig regelmäßig Workshops und Schulungen, um Unternehmen, Forschungseinrichtungen und Entwickler*innen den Einstieg in FIWARE zu erleichtern. Projekte wie PixelTwins zeigen schon heute, wie FIWARE etwa in der Landwirtschaft für präzise Datenanalyse und smarte Anwendungen eingesetzt werden kann.

Die von der FH Technikum Wien gemeinsam mit der Wirtschaftsagentur entwickelte Open-Source-Landkarte macht zusätzlich die Vielfalt der Aktivitäten in Wien sichtbar:

Open Source for an Open Digital World (English)

Open Source drives digital sovereignty, innovation, and economic scalability. More and more organizations are building sustainable business models based on open-source solutions—through services, platforms, or community-driven development.

Open Source Hub Vienna – A New Center for Innovation
The Open Source Hub Vienna, initiated by the Vienna Business Agency, serves as a central platform for knowledge sharing, best practices, and networking. Its mission is to foster open collaboration, make projects visible, and advance the use of cutting-edge open-source technologies such as FIWARE.

FIWARE iHub Opening Event
The official opening of the FIWARE iHub on the 15th of September 2025 offered a dynamic program with deep insights into the world of Open Source and FIWARE.

  • Keynotes & Insights: Experts from research, public administration, and industry highlighted the role of Open Source in driving digital sovereignty, security, and innovation.

  • Practical Examples: NEC Labs showcased an AI model predicting landmine contamination risks in Cambodia. Other talks demonstrated how Digital Twins and real-time data visualization can enable smart city platforms, energy solutions, and next-generation mobility.

  • Hands-on Workshop: Prof. Dr. Haydar Mecit (Bochum University of Applied Sciences) provided a practical introduction to FIWARE-based Smart City platforms and IoT technologies that accelerate urban energy and mobility transitions.

The opening not only provided technical insights but also created space for networking, exchange, and the start of a vibrant Open Source community in Vienna.

FIWARE in Focus
As an official FIWARE iHub, Vienna will host regular workshops and training sessions to help companies, researchers, and developers adopt FIWARE technologies. Projects like PixelTwins already show how FIWARE can be applied in agriculture for precise data monitoring and smart solutions.

2025 Highlights

The Interreg Alpine Space Programme 2021–2027 represents a key European funding initiative designed to support transnational cooperation across the Alpine region. With participation from seven countries—Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Slovenia, and Switzerland—the programme aims to address shared territorial challenges and promote sustainable, innovation-driven development.

With a total budget of approximately €107 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the programme provides co-financing of up to 75% for eligible projects. Funding is available for a range of stakeholders, including public authorities, research institutions, SMEs, and non-profit organizations.

Of particular relevance to the open source and digital innovation community are the programme’s priorities, which include:

  • Promoting climate resilience and green infrastructure

  • Supporting carbon neutrality and circular economy practices

  • Advancing innovation and digitalisation to enable sustainable transitions

  • Strengthening governance and institutional capacities across borders

These goals align closely with the values of the open source ecosystem: open collaboration, transparent knowledge exchange, and cross-border innovation.
